In 1997 I was asked by the US Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) to write a series of essays on the new David Attenborough series Life of Birds, which the station was about to transmit for the first time. I had met Sir David several times through my work at Radio Times and other UK publications.

I wrote an introductory feature on Sir David, and a further six pieces on the series and his part in it – Making Life of Birds, Birds Brains, Evolution, Champion Birds, Parenthood, and Bird Songs. It’s good to see that, more than 20 years later, the series of articles is still live on the PBS website. It is a tribute to the enormous popularity of Sir David in the USA.
